The Colon (Optimal shape and functioning)

The Colon

The Colon is Five and a half feet long and it is bunched up like an accordion around the Small Intestine. It is the last part of the digestive system and is considered the sewage system of the body. The Colon consists of various parts: The Ascending Colon, which is the first part that connects with the Illeocecal valve to the small intestine, next is the Transverse Colon, which runs from the Hepatic Flecture to the Spleanic Flexure of the Colon, then the Descending Colon, then the Sigmoid Colon, which is the last part of the Colon before the Rectum and Anus. The Rectum has two Sphincter Muscles that open and close allowing waste matter to stay in until Perastalsis, the muscular movement of the Colon works to push it out, which is usually triggered by eating or drinking.

This Chart illustrates how the various parts of the colon are connected with other parts of the body. Thus if waste becomes impacted in a fold of the colon, the reflected part of the body can be weakened and or diseases. Thus by cleaning out the old fecal impactions in the colon can clear up another health problem indirectly. This is based on Norman Walker's Theories from his book 'Colon Health'.
Reflexology Chart of the Colon
The colon is designed to be a place where the left over matter from the small intestine is dried. Because of modern diets, modern medicines, and some other factors the fecal matter can become plastered against the wall of the intestine, called mucoid plaque. When this plaque thickens, it narrows the passage way of new waste, which further perpetuates constipation. Also with the abundance of old fecal matter and the use of antibiotics, there is an overgrowth of bad bacteria (possibly candida fungus) and a deficiency of good bacteria. Also parasites thrive is this environment, which lie in the old feces encrusted on the wall of the colon. Colonics matched with proper dietary changes and certain products help clean out this toxic condition of the colon and restore it to health.
Many modern foods are what are called Mucus forming foods, that is that they are mucusy foods; such as Dairy (milk), Meat, Sugar, and Flour products such as Bread and pasta. These foods have a lot of stickyness to them, which causes the matter that moves through the intestinal track to move more slowly then it should, called slowed bowel transit time.
How does what I eat effect my colon and thus my bowel function?
How is the Colon related to the other Organs of the body?
How does this condition in the Colon contribute to all Diseases?
The colon contains nearly 60 varieties of microflora or bacteria to aid digestion, promote vital nutrient production, to maintain pH (acid-base) balance, and to prevent proliferation of harmful bacteria. These bacteria provide important functions such as the synthesis of folic acid and valuable nutrients from foods, including vitamins 'K' and portions of the 'B' complex. Bacillus coli and acidophillus comprise the majority of healthy bacteria in the colon along with other disease producing bacteria in lesser numbers.
What is proper Bowel function (How many Bowel movements should you have a day)?
Other problems you might have in your digestive system do to an impacted and impaired Colon?
The main functions of the colon are absorption of water and minerals, and the formation and elimination of feces
Ideally you should have a bowel movement for every meal you eat in a day. If you are having a less than this than you have a form of constipation. Because constipation is not only when you sit and strain on the toilet, but rather is when your feces does not leave the body as efficiently as it should. Any fecal matter that is not leaving the body is staying behind and hardening in the colon, making it more difficult for the new waste to move out.
