Teach your Children how to be practical when they play in the dirt. Composting is a magical event that shows how nature is essentially in a constant state of transformation. For children to learn about and participate in composting provides for them an experiential form of knowledge. It is interesting for them to see how the earth becomes the plant and becomes the fruit and then how the fruit is broken down again and becomes the earth.
If we expect children to be good citizens of the earth then we must teach them first the cycles of life. Composting teaches how the food that we eat comes from soil that comes from broken down food that was eaten in one form or another. When a chicken, a goat, a cow, a horse or even a worm eats a natural diet, then the waste that comes from their bodies creates nourishment back for the earth. Composting is the science and art of doing this. Composting with children is part of our gardening with children Workshop, which cultivates the knowledge and interest in children. What child doesn't want to see food magically become soil, learn about mushrooms and test Ph like the scientists? Which child doesn't want to play with worms?
By teaching gardening to children you are teaching them to value life, to see the truth of what sustains them, to make them sensitive to our delicate relationship with nature, to inspire them to be self sufficient, to make them more environmentally aware, politically aware, but most of all to reintroduce to them the beauty of working with plants that has some how been lost in our modern fast paced technological times.
To forget how to dig the earth and to tend the soil is to forget ourselves. -Ghandi
Whether it is planting seeds, transplanting starter plants, or planting trees...when it is done in the company of children it is that much more important and fun. Our Gardening with Children workshop brings a light hearted healing experience for both parents, extended family, and children of all ages.
By teaching children how to cultivate the earth, you are empowering them with a tool of self sustainability. In a time when the world's fossil fuels are diminishing local agriculture and growing ones own food is an enjoyable and pragmatic way for families to share time with one another. The cost of Organic food is becoming more and more expensive. For families sometimes provided all organic food for the whole family is too expensive. But alas, if you make it a family affair to grow your own food, the family will be healthier in so many different ways. Come and teach children the awe of working with the earth
Part of our Children's Gardening Workshop teaches how to garden in accordance with the phases of the moon. This is called Lunar Gardening. This helps bring awareness of the cosmic effects upon the earth, which makes children more conscious of other aspects of reality. The Moon effects the moisture in the soil and in the plants, and because so it is best to do certain things with certain phases of the moon. The moon gives us the guide of when to harvest, sow seeds, fertilize and so on.
To the right is a father and his son planting an orange tree together. Come and learn how to properly transplant, fertilize, and care for you trees and plants. The beautiful thing about learning with your children is that you can make it a part of their chores, and then they will know how to do it for themselves when they are on their own.
What child, or adult for that matter, would not enjoy to pick the fruits of their own labor. The natural world is magical. The fruits and herbs of the earth are all delicious in each their own way. If we want our children to choose to eat healthy foods like fruits and vegetables then we should make it a larger part of their lives. Harvesting teaches children patience and about the essential nature of transformation that is the essence of life. In a part of the world where materialism and consumerism is in their faces constantly, patience and recognition of the essence of life as change becomes invaluable for cultivating conscious caring people to inherit the earth.
